Explore the cities

Explore life and death in the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum using streetmaps of the areas, with key objects featured in the exhibition plotted on the maps.

As well as information and zoomable images of the objects, the app also includes curatorial insights into what life was like in these two different cities. The themes include: urban context, commerce, religion and beliefs, wealth and status, grooming and adornment, relaxation, entertainment, and food and drink.

The Computer analysis of Roman Republican coin hoards
by Dr Kris Lockyear (BA, MSc, PhD, FSA)
Senior Lecturer
University College London, Institute of Archaeology.

Dr Lockyear has been collecting and analysing data regarding Roman Republican coin hoards since 1989.  The database, which  consists of over 100,000 well identified coins,  has been extensively (but not exhaustively) analysed and has resulted in a number of papers and a book. In particular, Kris' examination of Michael Crawford’s controversial die estimates has become a key paper in the debate.

He is the author of:
Lockyear, K. (2007) Patterns and Process in Late Roman Republican Coin Hoards, 157-2 BC.  Oxford: British Archaeological Reports, International Series 1733.
